Opal was named after her second cousin, Opal Baumgartner, the daughter of Walter and Bertha Baumgartner and granddaughter of John and Mary (Mader) Baumgartner. The name was chosen by Opal Wehneman's Grandmother (Ida Effie Cook) Mader. "Effie" had also named her own twins after Walter and Bertha Baumgartner.
Notes for Virgil Taylor & Opal Frances (Family)
Opal and Virgil eloped to Fort Wayne, IN. Opal was the youngest of five children, and none of her older siblings had married yet. Her parents refused to give their permission for her to marry until she turned 21, and in Ohio at that time, one couldn't marry younger than that without parental permission. (They were both 20.) So, they went to Indiana for the weekend (she told her parents she was staying with a friend). When they returned, they went back to their own homes and continued to keep the secret until Opal became pregnant and later miscarried that baby. Of course, at that point, it was hard to convince people that they'd actually been married for several months! At any rate, after a rocky start, her family eventually accepted the marriage and they all got along well.
